Silver PlayStation2 On Monday, Sony announced that it would be releasing a limited edition of the Silver PlayStation 2 console. Packed with this comes a limited edition of the Dualshock controller. However, no games are included.

This move by Sony seems to be a very obvious step towards ruining Microsoft’s plans to dominate the video game market in this year’s holiday shopping season. Microsoft has said it intends selling a minimum of four million additional consoles before the end of the year, at least double that of Sony’s highest estimates for the PlayStation 3.

With the numbers of PS3 likely in the one million to two million range by years end, Sony has turned to the PS2 to help boost up its gaming sales in the meantime. By all accounts, the PS2 itself is outselling the Xbox 360, although by a small margin.

Sony Computer Entertainment American executive vice president Jack Tretton said, “Six years after its initial launch, the PlayStation 2 continues to enjoy nonstop success, outselling all other consoles. The introduction of this limited edition model is sure to be a hit this holiday season with die-hard PlayStation fans and new gamers alike.”

Sony says it has already shipped 111 million consoles, and over 1.12 billion software titles have shipped worldwide for the PS2. It is also the number one console in North America, Europe/PAL territories and Japan/Asia.

The silver PS2 will retail in the U.S. for $129. Canadians will pay $139.
