Sony PlayStation 3 to aid Medical Researcch

Sony PlayStation 3 The new Sony PlayStation 3 is not all about entertainment, fun and games. This is the message that Sony Corp. is trying to convey in announcing that the new game consoles that were recently launched in North America are as powerful as supercomputers. The company claims that the PS3 can help Stanford University researchers analyze complex human protein structures and perhaps could fin cures for cancer, Alzheimer’s and other ailments.

A while ago we had reported on the Sony PlayStation 3 and its potential for curing cancer and Alzheimer’s. Now that the PlayStation 3 has been launched, we have some more information on the PlayStation 3 from Sony.

Sony Entertainment says that when Cure(at) PlayStation 3 is launched, PS3 owners can register their machines with Stanford University, download specially designed software and leave their machines online to process data when they are not busy playing.

It has been modeled after programs, where personal computers process high-volume data signs of extra terrestrial life and other tasks.

Sony also said that data processing time can be up to 20 times faster with a global network of PlayStation 3s, which have been fitted with advanced Cell processors that can perform billions of calculations per second.

But this program will kick off only when the Sony PlayStation 3 becomes available globally.
