On Wednesday, Microsoft announced that it would offer some additional updated versions of popular 1980s-era games through Xbox Live Arcade, an online service that lets people download free trial games and buy them for $5 to $15.
The classic arcade game ‘Frogger’ will be the first game to be available through the program for 400 Microsoft Points, equivalent to $5.00 USD. From July 19 to August 9, Microsoft will release a game every Wednesday. In each game, Microsoft has updated the classics to support better graphics, as well as creating new ways to play through the company’s Xbox Live service.
The schedule for the games release is as below:
July 11: Konami and Digital Eclipse’s Frogger
July 19: NinjaBee’s Cloning Clyde
July 26: Namco’s Galaga
August 2: Capcom and Sensory Sweep’s Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting
August 9: Namco’s Pac-Man
Xbox Live Arcade has been a surprising success for the company, with over five million free trial games downloaded, and over one million actually purchased. Microsoft said that use of the service has been across a broad spectrum of customers, including hardcore gamers and beginners alike. Currently, 20 games are available through the service; however Microsoft has plans to increase that to 50 games by the end of the year.
