Taking green technology a step ahead is LG that has unveiled a LG Display that works with energy from the Sun. The 14.1 inch LCD panel is meant for notebook PCs and needs sunlight instead of backlight unit.
The panel uses selective reflection plates that exist in the backlight panels and the Backlight Data Signal Switching Technology to switch from reflective mode in high luminance setting, which is sunlight, to transmissive mode in low lights in indoors and at night. This panel is the first of its kind that easily switches from backlight use to outdoor reflective mode “with the touch of a button”.
All this simply means that you can use the notebook outdoors too, unlike the conventional ones, and use it to your own advantage of saving energy. Notebook users will surely understand how very significant this technology is! Inspired from ET, is it?
In-Byeong Kang, LG Display’s Vice President and Head of LCD Laboratory, noted, “Our environmentally friendly, 14.1 inch LCD for notebook PC overcomes the challenges of extending battery life in use of notebook PCs outdoors where isn’t likely to be power outlets, while providing superior outdoor visibility.”
One of the functions that let it work outdoors is that the panel issues higher contrast ratio, the one that exceeds by 9:1, whilst being used outdoors in reflective mode.
LG is soon going to display this brand new eco-friendly LG Display LCD panel for notebooks at the CES 2009, which also features improved motion picture response time (MPRT).
