WeP TOP.UPS

I have to agree, the TOP.UPS by WeP Peripherals Limited is unlike another gadget or a tech product I have ever reviewed. Normally, people here in Mumbai are now acquainted with the words ‘uninterruptible power supply’ after the threats of power cuts.

TOP.UPS is very different from the normal UPS that are available in the market. It has been made in such a way that it looks very pretty and I do assert that it does look nice on the tabletop. The UPS what we got was a bright yellow and red in colour and looked more like an alien from space.

Phones plugged and CD stack

However, the TOP.UPS is not just about the looks. It is better than other UPS as it offers around twenty minutes of back up if you are using a P4 machine and a standard fifteen-inch monitor. If you are using a seventeen-inch monitor, the back time reduces to fifteen minutes. And of the great things about it is that it takes about eight to ten hours of continuous charging to fully get the TOP.UPS running. One more advantage that it offers over other UPS is that after the power cut, you can start using the TOP.UPS very early, in fact, you can start your computer a couple of hours earlier than other UPS users.

As we had mentioned above, TOP.UPS is a tabletop UPS and normally people do not keep it up with the monitor, as there is a huge risk it might interfere with the monitor. This does not happen with it, as is the key component in the UPS is an iron core transformer, which has a tightly wound design. And you can even attach your telephone and modem lines to this UPS.

Besides these features of the UPS, the TOP.UPS gives you more. I still remember during the dreaded 26/7 floods, people faced a huge problem. Even if they had network, they still could not use their cell phones as they were not charged and the electricity was not there for around fourteen to fifteen hours. This is where the TOP.UPS comes handy. You can even charge your mobile phone! Moreover, not just Nokia phones, you can charge Samsung, Motorola and Sony Ericsson phones.

WeP has also included a CD rack on top of the UPS. This is very useful as the TOP.UPS sits pretty on your table and you can store six of your favorite CDs in the rack. There is also a utility lamp on the front panel that is switched on when you open the flap. There is also a digital clock below the flap. The lamp is bright enough and during a power cut, it would be very helpful.

The TOP.UPS has one more factor that makes it exceptional. It comes with a ‘O’ Logic software that allows an orderly shut down of PC in case of a power cut. What’s more, it saves files in a separate directory that can be later accessed after the power comes back. It also lets you to put your computer in the hibernate mode.

Now let’s talk about the shortcomings in the TOP.UPS. It weighs around 6 kilograms, which is somewhat heavy. Also, if WeP is aiming to make the TOP.UPS a little different from the other available UPS by including features like clocks and utility lamps, they should have also included a fan as India is a very hot and humid country and it would have definitely helped. The wire, which connects the battery inside, should have been a little longer.

TechShout Rating

Our Shout: We think the TOP.UPS is a nice gadget, a little expensive as it is priced around Rs. 3000, but the features it offers to the average consumers are great and if you are someone who uses the PC as a workstation, then this is a must buy. We give it a ‘7’ out of 10.
