Microsoft launches New ABACUS Smart Watch, its latest Wireless Data Wristwatch
Watches, when introduced probably had the sole purpose of displaying the time. However the conventional time and date displaying watch has come a long way. There have been Bluetooth watches by giants like Seiko and Citizen that probably makes one feel as though he’s sporting his mobile phone on his wrist. And now there’s one more addition to the list.
In its Smart Personal Objects Technology initiative, Microsoft has gone ahead and launched its next generation of Smart Watches for MSN Direct.
Dubbed the ABACUS Smart Watch 2006, the trendy accessory does not only have a thinner bezel and more stylish bands from Fossil Inc. but also doubles the storage capacity of previous watches and improves upon download speed of content from MSN Direct Channels.
It uses the FM radio broadcasting network to transmit data to the watch, offering information such as weather, stock quotes and traffic news.
Microsoft unveiled its Spot technology in 2002 and the first watches started shipping in early 2004. But the first watches looked bulky and did poorly in the marketplace. The smart phone is available online at Brookstone.com, Amazon.com and MSNDirect.com for $179 and includes a one-year subscription to the MSN Direct Smart Plan which goes at a regular rate of $39.95 per year. Integration with MSN Messenger and Outlook calendar synchronisation are available at an annual fee of $20.
Eric Lang, general manager of the SPOT initiative at Microsoft said, “This new generation of Smart Watches gives wearers greater choice, convenience and value. With the ABACUS Smart Watch 2006, we not only refined the aesthetics, but also significantly enhanced the technology within the watch and are pleased with this latest extension of the SPOT vision.”
